Several (somewhat shaky) sources for this one (ComingSoon.net, via AvPGalaxy, who evidently are getting their information from this German website, featuring an interview with Giger’s wife), but let’s keep our fingers crossed: H.R. Giger, the Swiss surrealist famous for creating the creature in Ridley Scott‘s Alien, is rumored to be joining Scott on the reported prequel to the first – and arguably best – of the Alien films.

AvPGalaxy included this quote from the German site, which I now offer to you (via Google Translate, which explains the clunky English diction):

HR Giger, creator of “Alien”figure for the 1979 film by Ridley Scott will be incurred once again work with the director. This confirmed the wife of the Swiss artist, Carmen Scheifele, in the TV show “Glanz & Gloria” on Swiss television. Her husband was “on board “, that is it, “said Scheifele. It would certainly be a 3D movie, but probably two. The plan is a prequel that tells the story before the first Alien movie.

I’m down with most of that – the 3D trend persists, despite the disdain of almost every critic you can think of. Still, having Giger and Scott on board is in theory a boon for Alien fans, who remain some of the most stubbornly devoted aficionados around.

According to the various half-confirmed rumors swirling around the blogosphere, the prequel will focus on the “Space Jockey,” a dead figure found in the downed alien craft in the original film. Scott revealed a few plot details (via ComingSoon):

“It’s set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver’s character Ellen Ripley]. The film(s) will be really tough, really nasty,” says Scott of the proposed two-part prequel. “It’s the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?”

It’s still just a rumor, though. Giger was famously screwed by Hollywood when just about everyone profited from his original Alien design but the designer himself. Personally, I’d love to see an Alien movie without the damn Predators, so we’ll keep an eye on this story.

Are you excited about the prospect of Scott and Giger teaming up again?
