Hooray! Turns out the horrifying scuttlebutt that George Lucas planned to snatch up the screen rights of deceased movie stars in order to inject them into new releases is, “a false rumor.”
A spokesperson for Lucasfilm spoke out to On The Red Carpet to set the record straight about the rumor that got a lot of mileage on the blogosphere since many found it easy to believe Lucas could harbor so little respect for the works of others, considering the lack of integrity he’s shown towards his own films.
So rest easy fans of Katharine Hepburn, Orson Welles, and Bette Davis, Lucas will let them rest in peace!
However, Star Wars fans are not so lucky as Lucas will continue to mine that vein until he’s a CGI ghost himself. Upcoming Star Wars projects include a live-action TV series, which is on hold in development over budget issues, a comedy series developed by Seth Green and Matthew Senreich (Robot Chicken) and Brendan Hay (The Daily Show), and a Blu-ray release of all six Star Wars films, followed by a retrofitted 3D re-release beginning with Episode 1 in 2012.
