It’s brought up in nearly every post regarding Snowpiercer on the site, but we’re worried about The Weinstein Company’s U.S. distribution of Bong Joon-ho‘s English-language debut. When they picked the post-apocalyptic thriller Snowpiercer up last fall, a wide summer 2013 release was rumored, which clearly isn’t in the works. Then when an August release date was announced in South Korea, we thought it would at least show up on the fall film festival circuit. But with Venice and Toronto revealing much of their slate, it’s absent. The first reviews have already landed (some from very early press screenings in the U.S.) and before any sort of domestic marketing starts, the final trailer in South Korea has arrived.
A tense piece running just under a minute, we can see our lead (played by Chris Evans) embark on his “destiny” as he fights for his life and those around him. As for a potential U.S. bow, we wouldn’t be surprised if The Weinstein Company holds this one until the first half of 2014 (not unlike Fox Searchlight’s handling of Stoker, from fellow South Korean director Park Chan-wook). With a busy 2014 Oscar-bait slate including Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Grace of Monaco, August: Osage County, Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom and (hopefully) The Immigrant, it leaves little time for the Weinsteins to deliver Snowpiercer. As we wait (and wait), check out the new trailer below and share your thoughts on when you think the film could land.
When do you think Snowpiercer will be released in the U.S.? What do you think of the latest trailer?
