It’s once again time for us to see what we can find on the shelves at the local DVD stores.
Grab ‘Em Right Away:
Nothing. Yup it’s another week that you can save for a rainy day.
Check it Out:
Saint John of Last Vegas
Directed by: Hue Rhodes
Written by: Hue Rhodes & Dante Alighieri
Starring: Steve Buscemi, Romany Malco, Sarah Silverman & Peter Dinklage
Why should you rent this? Even though the main character of John (Steve Buscemi) is hit and miss from scene to scene Romany Malco makes up for it in almost every moment he’s on screen. Playing the veteran fraud detector, Virgil, Romany Malco just oozes intimidation in a hilarious way. He even manages to change magically into a suit and enter a strip club and get every woman, as well as the gay bartender, to pay attention to him and only him. Peter Dinklage also works as a more-or-less cameo role where he plays John’s boss. Sarah Silverman on the other hand just feels like she’s going a little too far over the edge with her character, but that might be more of a writing issue than an acting decision in my eyes.
Greenberg (check out our blu-ray review here)
Directed by: Noah Baumbach
Written by: Noah Baumbach & Jennifer Jason Leigh
Starring: Ben Stiller, Greta Gerwig & Rhys Ifans
Why should you rent it? So that you can tell all your indie filmmaking friends that you saw the new Noah Baumbach film and found it mediocre at best. I really loved Greta Gerwig in her role as the lost assistant that has this fling with Ben Stiller’s character but that’s where my love for this movie ends. There is nothing truly interesting or likable about Roger Greenberg (Ben Stiller) and even though I liked Florence (Greta Gerwig) you find yourself wondering what messed up things had to happen to her, for her to be able to put up with the madness that is Roger Greenberg. It’s just an unlikable love story that I couldn’t connect with, but at the same time realize the market for it.
Avoid like the Plague:
The Bounty Hunter
Directed by: Andy Tennant
Written by: Sarah Thorp
Starring: Gerard Butler & Jennifer Aniston
Why should you not bother collecting the reward? Because the movie is so bad that it made me rethink my negative thoughts on last year’s The Ugly Truth. Jennifer Aniston is always a wonderful indication that a movie is going to go down the alley of ridiculously bad movie street. Gerard Butler also seems to be earning that title with his recent foray into the world of romcoms. I hope that soon enough he’ll realize that he needs to get back to being an over-the-top action star and stop thinking that since women think he’s hot he should be being awkwardly falling in love with them. What I hate most about this movie though isn’t how uneventful it really all is but how stupidly the writer decided to insert the character of Stewart (Jason Sudeikis) who is there for absolutely no reason but to get the laugh of the guy who doesn’t know that no means no. It’s a movie that if your girlfriend decides to pick it up at the rental store you need to start thinking of strategies to distract her into wanting to watch an actually good movie.
