Darren Aronofsky revealed to HitFix the title and rough plot of his entry into Marvel’s X-Men spin-off universe.
Aronofsky’s film, called simply The Wolverine, and will be a “one-off,” standing apart from Gavin Hood‘s X-Men Origins: Wolverine and evidently separate from Matthew Vaughn‘s eagerly awaited X-Men: First Class. Aronofsky’s film, written by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) will find Hugh Jackman‘s Logan, aka Wolverine in Japan, taking on the father and brothers of a Japanese woman he’s fallen in love with. Aronofsky also confirms that cinematographer Matthew Libatique will be shooting the film, welcome news in light of Libatique‘s stellar work shooting both Iron Man movies for director Jon Favreau.
And I thought I was excited about this project before all these announcements. I liked X-Men Origins: Wolverine more than most, and while Darren Aronofsky isn’t exactly famed for the light, chipper tone Favreau brought to the Iron Man films, he is a brilliant filmmaker. His stamp on the Wolverine franchise will be nothing less than unique.
Do you think Aronofsky’s approach to the next Wolverine movie is the right choice?
