Back in February, it was announced that Gina Carano would follow up her well-received acting debut, Haywire, with an action film title In The Blood, from director John Stockwell (Turistas, Blue Crush). And, now, THR brings us more casting news, as Danny Trejo and Stephen Lang have both signed on to act opposite the MMA star.
In The Blood will star Carano as a wife who brutally extracts revenge on the men she believes killed her husband while they were vacationing in the Caribbean. Trejo is set to play the main villain, Big Biz, while Lang will be seen as the protagonist’s father/mentor who trained her to be the fighting machine she has become. Production, initially slated to begin over the summer, will instead start on location in Puerto Rico this November.
In The Blood is the sort of “safe” movie that makes sense for Carano; it’s another action movie and, unlike Haywire, it seems like it’ll be more focused on action and give her more of an opportunity to shine. But let’s be honest here: this sounds like a straight-to-DVD movie. I’m sure it’ll get released in theaters during a “dump” month (September is a good bet), but the casting does nothing to elevate anyone’s expectations. Trejo is fun and all but he himself is a straight-to-DVD guy; Lang may have done Avatar, but he doesn’t exactly light the world on fire with the rest of his filmography. I don’t see In The Blood making much of an impact on the moviegoing public, but I’ll probably end up seeing it just to watch Carano triangle choke somebody.
Does In The Blood sound like an appealing time at the movie theater, or an appealing future Redbox rental?
