Steven Soderbergh‘s latest film Haywire marked a high point for January release, a slick action thriller oozing with style. Audiences didn’t quite connect with it though, as it been crawling to the $20 million mark domestically. Featuring a break-out performance from MMA fighter Gina Carano, I’ve been waiting to hear what she would jump onto next. THR has the details and it is no surprise she’ll be sticking with the same genre.

With a steep decline in directorial quality she has joined the latest film from Into the Blue and Blue Crush director John Stockwell. Titled In the Blood, the film being compared to Taken, follows a husband who vanishes while on a Caribbean vacation. Carano plays the wife who goes on a mission to get him back. Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead screenwriters Bennett Yellin and James Robert Johnston have script duties for the film that Stockwell says “will showcase not only Gina’s fighting skills, but also her acting abilities as her character struggles to reign in her violent past.”

This was my major fear with Carano’s acting future. Starting off on an high note, she could easily dip into John Cena-level territory with picking up that anything that comes along. Stockwell isn’t the most accomplished of directors and these screenwriters give me little hope. Carano is one of the few female action stars that is actually convincing on screen so it would be a shame to see her pick up more projects like these.

In the Blood will begin shooting this summer in Puerto Rico.

What do you think about Carano’s Haywire follow-up?
