It’s not every day that one of Hollywood’s top blockbuster filmmakers announces his or her next project, but last night was the exception. Amidst the Oscar craziness, news broke on what Christopher Nolan would be directing for his first post-Batman project and for those expecting a step down in scope, we were just about as wrong as could be.
Originally set for Steven Spielberg, the project titled Interstellar is described as a “complex and multi-layered” sci-fi picture that follows “explorers [who] travel through a wormhole,” with conceits such as alternate dimensions and time travel working their way in. We knew brother of The Dark Knight Rises director, Jonathan Nolan, delivered the script, based on theories developed by Caltech physicist Kip Thorne, but now more details are making their way online.
Buried in a post over on Deadline, their sources indicate that Christopher Nolan himself will actually be writing the script, that takes his brother’s draft and merges ideas the Inception director came up with himself. This is not an uncommon practice, as the brothers teamed up for the all the scripts in their Batman trilogy, as well as The Prestige, but one wonders just how different the final product will be from the original draft.
We’re also given a bit more regarding the plot of the film, as the ambitious project “will depict a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest borders of our scientific understanding.” It’s endlessly intriguing, but we’ve got a ways to go before we see anything from this one, so hang tight as the updates come in.
What do you think about Christopher Nolan scripting and the new logline?
