Following complications from a heart attack this past Friday, Carrie Fisher passed away this morning at the age of 60, her family confirmed. Best known as her iconic role in the Star Wars franchise as Princess Leia Organa, Fisher leaves behind her mother Debbie Reynolds and daughter Billie Lourd.
“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning,” family spokesman Simon Halls tells People. “She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”
The actress — also known for debut role in Shampoo before she made A New Hope, as well as Hannah and Her Sisters, The Blues Brothers, The ‘Burbs, and many more — was also an accomplished writer. Including her book and subsequent screenplay Postcards from the Edge, she had a low-profile career as a script doctor, polishing Hook, The Wedding Singer, Sister Act, the third Lethal Weapon, Intolerable Cruelty, and more.
Fisher, who reprised her legendary role in last year’s The Force Awakens (and proved to be one of the highlights of that press tour), was recently touring her memoir, The Princess Diarist, which features the published diary from her days on the set of the original Star Wars trilogy. As we remember the Hollywood icon, who will be greatly missed, check out vintage videos of her appearances on Letterman, Charlie Rose and more, where she discusses her experience playing Leia and her career.
