There are many times where I watch a movie and I think “man, that would make a great Broadway musical.” Okay I don’t, but for the sake of this, just go with it.  American Psycho, the 2000 film that re-launched the career of Christian Bale, was not one of those fake times. Yet surprisingly enough, it’s being adapted into a musical; even more surprising, it’s headed for the bright lights of Broadway. [Page Six]

Duncan Sheik has been tapped to compose the musical, and playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is hard at work on the book (first draft is expected to be turned in early next year). Here’s what Aguirre-Sacasa had to say about the project:

“There are murders, and they are on stage in full view of the audience,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “An ax and a chef’s knife will be used. I think there’s going to be a lot of blood.”

And Sheik told Page Six his plan when it comes to composing the songs:

“Think about Malcom McDowell singing songs during A Clockwork Orange

I’m going to assume that means it’s going to be an off-putting/creepier musical since I’m a bad person and haven’t seen A Clockwork Orange. Now to some this doesn’t seem like news, since the musical adaptation of American Psycho has been talked about since 2008. But with a playwright and a composer signed on and hard at work, the musical you probably thought wasn’t going to happen is actually going to go down. Bad Ass Digest even hints at a major possible cameo, but I won’t include the surprise here.

Are you excited at the prospect of an American Psycho musical? What movies did you think would be made into musicals before this one? And who else is shocked Duncan Sheik went from “one-hit wonder” to Tony Award-winning Broadway composer?
