“You can’t have this story without hope,” Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves recently told HitFix. “There’s a real hope embodied in what happens between Jason Clarke and Keri Russell and Caesar. We know the end of the story, but it’s avery long way from the end of the story. It has an epic tragic element to it.”

We’ve now got a new glimpse of that story as 20th Century Fox has released a new full-length trailer for the summer spectacle. With Reeves being one of the more accomplished studio helmers in recent memory, we’re hoping this follow-up will effectively continue the successful prequel that came before it. Judging from this footage, he’s done a fine job adding stakes and improved special effects, and one can check it out below.

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.
