Although she won’t be seen in any English-language films this year, Penélope Cruz recently got back to her roots for Ma Ma, a new film from Julio Medem. Following the actress (also serving as a producer for the first time) as an unemployed teacher afflicted with breast cancer, it’s getting a release in Spain this September, but doesn’t have a U.S. date yet. However, the first international trailer has arrived, although no subtitles are available yet.

Ma Ma is right up my street: Large emotional and dramatic intensity, and it turns on the intimacy of the characters — one woman, two men, played by Luis Tosar and Asier Etxeandia, who love her, and a 10-year-old boy,” Medem said last year. “It’s the first time I portray a character who’s not a woman and lover but a mother. Maternity is key in Ma Ma. The tragedy stems from that.” Check out the trailer below.
