A number of films this fall will offer some straight-up horror thrills, but one is taking a meta look at the genre. Looking like a mix between Cabin in the Woods and Scream with a dash of Tropic Thunder thrown in, The Final Girls premiered earlier this year at South by Southwest Film Festival and now the first trailer has landed.

We said in our review, “Horror comedy has long been one of the most difficult genres mixes to pull off successfully. For The Final Girls, a high-concept meta riff on the slasher horror films of the 80’s, it mostly makes an intelligent use of a cast that is peppered with familiar faces, all who are driven to actually make this tone work.”

Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson and starring Taissa Farmiga, Malin Akerman, Alexander Ludwig, Nina Dobrev, Alia Shawkat, Thomas Middleditch, Adam Devine, Angela Trimbur, Chloe Bridges, and Tory N. Thompson, check out the trailer below.

When Max (Taissa Farmiga) and her friends reluctantly attend a screening of “Camp Bloodbath,” an infamous ‘80s cult horror film that starred Max’s late mother (Malin Akerman), they are accidentally sucked into the silver screen. They soon realize they’re trapped inside the movie and must team up with the horny, regan-era idiot “Camp Bloodbath” counselors — including Max’s mom as the shy scream queen — to battle the film’s machete-wielding killer, Billy Murphy. Face to face with her mother for the first time in years, Max has a second chance not only to see her, but to save her, and with the help of her friends, get back home before Billy kills them all.

The Final Girls arrives on October 9th in theaters and on VOD.
