“It’s a science-fiction space opera. It has a lot of things from a lot of genres that we love. It’s got a lot of original action, it’s got a lot of romance,” Lana Wachowski recently said when it comes to Jupiter Ascending, the latest sci-fi adventure from her and her brother, Andy. Coming off their passion project, Cloud Atlas — not exactly a box-office juggernaut — we were surprised Warner Bros. gave them a summer tentpole so quickly, but today nevertheless brings our first look at the film.

Led by Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, it takes place in a near future where humans aren’t as evolved as powerful beings across the universe (with Tatum playing a hybrid of a wolf and an albino), and in which a woman becomes an assassination target by the queen of the universe. Heavily playing up the action elements, this first look at footage, in some aspects, appears even wilder than their last feature. No matter how it turns out, in a summer full of retreaded material, this original property is right near the top of our must-see list. For a picture also starring Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Doona Bae, Douglas Booth, Tuppence Middleton, Tim Pigott-Smith, and James D’Arcy, check out the first trailer below.

Synopsis:

Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

Jupiter Ascending opens on July 25th, 2014.
