Matthew Vaughn helped launch the X-Men prequel franchise with 2011’s First Class, but now Bryan Singer has returned to the mutant world to bring everyone together. The time-travel heavy X-Men: Days of Future Past, set for a release this May, takes place in two different time periods as the characters that formed the original trilogy fight alongside those we were recently introduced to. The first trailer has now landed, which Singer says is “primarily a character piece, as most of our VFX are not yet finished.”

Even if there is much more to come, after Jack the Giant Slayer, it looks like Singer is clearly back in comfortable territory, taking the series to a darker place for this follow-up. The trailer, like many before it, also uses John Murphy‘s Adagio In D Minor from the Sunshine score and Hans Zimmer‘s Journey to the Line from The Thin Red Line, both embedded below.

Featuring the returning Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Shawn Ashmore, Ellen Page, Daniel Cudmore, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Lucas Till, as well as newcomers Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Booboo Stewart, Fan Bingbing, Adan Canto, Evan Peters and Josh Helman, check out the first trailer below.

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens on May 23rd, 2014.
