When it comes to low-budget, found-footage horror films one can do a whole lot worse than V/H/S. Premiering at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the film was sparked from an idea by Bloody Disgusting’s Brad Miska and followed a group of hooligans who happened upon a house full of videotapes. The group played them back, only to witness terror in separate short films, directed by Adam Wingard, David Bruckner, Ti West, Glenn McQuaid, Joe Swanberg and the quartet Radio Silence.
Fittingly, on Halloween, the news has landed that the story will continue in a follow-up and The Hollywood Reporter has news of some major talent already attached. Titled V/H/S/2 , Wingard, who also has You’re Next coming in the spring, is set to return to direct a short, while his collaborator and V/H/S co-writer Simon Barrett will deliver another segment in his directorial debut.
As for new talent, Gareth Evans — who gave us another festival favorite with The Raid — will direct a short segment in the film, co-helming with Macabre director Timo Tjahjanto. The Blair Witch Project helmer Eduardo Sanchez is teaming with his producer partner Gregg Hale and his Lovely Molley writer Jamie Nash. Lastly, Hobo With a Shotgun‘s Jason Eisener will direct another.
Production is already set for all over the world, including Los Angeles, British Columbia, Maryland, Nova Scotia and Indonesia (you can guess who is shooting in that last location) and we’ve even got a hint of a story. While the last film followed some troublemakers, this one will follow two investigators who happen upon the tape while searching for a missing student. As far as long-running horror series go, I’d certainly like to see this one have a healthy life, marking a sublime way to combine up-and-comers with experienced talent in the genre (and out of it, if Evans is any indication).
Are you looking forward to V/H/S/2? Are you surprised at the talent that has come onboard?
