Well, something had to give way eventually. Since becoming Hollywood’s hottest star after The Hurt Locker, Jeremy Renner has filled his schedule with many projects. These include his big blockbuster turns in The Bourne Legacy, The Avengers, and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, but quite a few indies as well. One of these was Better Living Through Chemistry, but it looks like he has crossed it off his list and now The Playlist reports a replacement.

Sam Rockwell will now play the lead role as a “straight-laced, small town pharmacist whose uneventful life spirals out of control when he starts an affair with a trophy wife customer (Jennifer Garner) who takes him on a joyride involving sex, drugs and a murder plot to kill her husband.” The Black List script will be directed by the writers themselves Geoff Moore and David Posamentier and Occupant Films, producers of The Wackness are backing the film also starring Judi Dench and Michelle Monaghan.

Although he recently shone in Moon, Rockwell has been on bit of a downswing lately with Conviction, Everybody’s Fine, Gentleman Broncos, and Iron Man 2 (although he was easily the best part of that blockbuster). Things are looking good though, as he returns with Jon Favreau for Cowboys & Aliens in a few weeks, then David Gordon Green‘s The Sitter this winter. And looking far out, he has Martin McDonagh‘s In Bruges follow-up Seven Psychopaths.

Is Rockwell a worthy replacement for Renner?
