Back in December we reported that Homeland‘s David Harewood was in talks to star in a biopic of legendary crooner/activist Paul Robeson. The article also mentioned that the producers were shopping for a director at that time and after a two month search, they have settled on their man.

Variety reports that Darrell Roodt has signed on to helm the movie, simply titled Robeson, for Four Stars International. Roodt is a veteran of filmmaking with over thirty years of experience in his native country of South Africa, including 1995’s Cry, the Beloved Country and more recently last year’s Stilte and another biopic with Winnie. Robeson begins shooting this summer with Harewood in the title role and Lou Gossett Jr. playing Civil Rights activist W.E.B. Du Bois. Check out a track from Robeson below and expect the film to arrive on the 2014 festival circuit.
