To no surprise, Todd Phillips‘ sequel to the biggest R-rated comedy of all-time, The Hangover Part II, took in a massive estimated $86.48m over Fri-Sun. Adding in Thursday and the rest of Memorial Day weekend, it could hit $135-$140m. The other major release of the weekend, Kung Fu Panda 2, opened less than ts predecessor with a total of $54m since Thursday. These two major releases helped set a Memorial Day weekend record, with the top 10 films bringing in $213.6m from Friday to Sunday, up 49% from last year.

In its second weekend Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides took in nearly $40m, crossing the domestic $150m mark. Bridesmaids continues to surprise, only dropping 21.6% and taking in $16.37m. It will certainly cross the $100m mark at this point.

In limited releases, Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life grabbed $352k from 4 theaters for a $88k, making it in the Top 20 per-theater-averages of all-time. Woody Allen‘s Midnight in Paris entered the top 10 as it expanded, bringing its total to almost $2m.

Next week the only wide release is X-Men: First Class. I could see The Hangover Part II significantly dropping, for Matthew Vaughn‘s superhero blockbuster to take first place. We also see a number of major limited releases in the form of Beginners, Submarine, and Beautiful Boy. Check out the Top 10 below.
