The eighth and final chapter in the Harry Potter saga secured the highest opening weekend of all-time, bringing in $168.5m for Warner Bros, the same studio who had the previous record with The Dark Knight. Worldwide the film did a record-breaking $475.6m.

In second place was Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon with $21.25m, bringing its total up to $302.8m, the highest current grosser of the year. Seth Gordon’s Horrible Bosses held quite well in its second weekend, with $17.63m and crossing the $60m mark.

The other debut of the weekend, Winnie the Pooh, came in 6th place for $8m. Like other family films, lets hope it has some legs. In limited release, Errol MorrisTabloid grabbed $101k from 14 theaters and Fox Searchlight’s Snow Flower and the Secret Fan got $136,000 from 24 theaters.

Next week sees the release of Paramount’s other big superhero film, Captain America: The First Avenger, as well as the sex comedy Friends With Benefits. Another Earth, The Myth of the American Sleepover, A Little Help, and Sarah’s Key all see limited openings. Expect Harry Potter to stay in the top spot.
