Deadline is reporting that Universal is getting into the found footage game, with the studio having just acquired a script by The Strangers helmer Bryan Bertino. The project, once titled Mockingbird, will be in the same vain as Paranormal Activity, revolving around the same “found footage” conceit that’s become so popular in the past five years or so.
The project is set to be produced by Activity series producer Jason Blum via Blumhouse; Drive‘s Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, through Marc Platt Productions; and Bertino with his Unbroken Pictures partner Adrienne Biddle. As of right now, the writer is not locked in to get behind the camera, but since the script has just been acquired, there’s not very many other production details circulating.
With the recent success of Paranormal Activity pictures of that ilk, there’s fair reason to expect this to make the big bucks, especially with the involvement of Blum, who produced all the Activity movies. With his experience on The Strangers, Bertino is also familiar with the horror-genre, which is hard to not take as a good sign for this type of production. The project is currently untitled, and a release date is unknown.
