Following up Blue Ruin and Green Room, director Jeremy Saulnier is back with Hold the Dark, a new thriller which, as scripted by Macon Blair, follows a hunter who tracks down a pack of wolves who steal a child from his village. Starring Alexander Skarsgård, Jeffrey Wright, and Riley Keough, the first trailer has now arrived ahead of a Netflix debut on September 28, as well a TIFF debut.

“Oh, man, [the shoot] was completely insane,” Saulnier recently said. “It was great, we had just enough to get it done, but we were punching way above our weight class as far as the scope and scale of this film. I also was able to experiment with many new things, the challenges of many firsts. Not only did it have the most intense dialogue, and also the highest body count, it had a first war scene, it had an aerial sequence, and by far the most animals I’ve worked with.”

Retired naturalist and wolf expert Russell Core (JEFFREY WRIGHT) journeys to the edge of civilization in northern Alaska at the pleading of Medora Slone (RILEY KEOUGH), a young mother whose son was killed by a pack of wolves. As Core attempts to help Medora track down the wolves who took her son, a strange and dangerous relationship develops between the two lonely souls.

But when Medora’s husband Vernon (ALEXANDER SKARSGARD) returns home from the Iraq War, the news of his child’s death ignites a violent chain of events. As local cop, Donald Marium (JAMES BADGE DALE), races to stop Vernon’s vengeful rampage, Core is forced on a perilous odyssey into the heart of darkness.
