After directing some of the most acclaimed films of the century thus far with his Paradise trilogy, Austrian director Ulrich Seidl is back this year with a new feature. As with much of his work, Safari looks to stretch the boundaries of the documentary form as he explores African trophy hunting.
In the works for many years, the first trailer has now arrived, which offers a brief, unsubtitled tease as we see a number of hunters before a glimpse at one of their kills. Considering the controversy around the topic, we imagine this may rightfully cause quite a stir when it lands this fall in Austria, as well as likely on the festival circuit.

Africa. In the wild expanses, where bushbucks, impalas, zebras, gnus and other creatures graze by the thousands, they are on holiday. German and Austrian hunting tourists drive through the bush, lie in wait, stalk their prey. They shoot, sob with excitement and pose before the animals they have bagged. A vacation movie about killing, a movie about human nature.
Safari will be released this fall internationally and is seeking U.S. distribution.
