Aside from using Kavinsky‘s Nightcall before Nicolas Winding Refn got his hands on it for Drive, The Lincoln Lawyer does a surprising amount of things right. It is a tight courtroom drama, directed with efficiency by Brad Furman and features the twangy, slick Matthew McConaughey that is tailor-made to deliver what I’ve penned “Lincoln Lawyerisms.” (See: “I checked the list of people I trust and your name ain’t on it.”) Alright, so I may love this movie more than most but it looks like I’m not alone.
We already knew an ABC TV series is coming, but today Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns was on CNBC (via Deadline) and announced his plans for a sequel to the film. He stated, “We do have some network shows we’re developing. The Lincoln Lawyer was a very successful movie for us and we’re developing that with ABC. And we’re going to do a sequel on Lincoln Lawyer as well.”
We don’t know how the story will continue, as there are four more Michael Connelly novels that feature the Mickey Haller character. And I can’t imagine McConaughey portraying the character in a TV series, as he has a steady film career. I hope this means that he will return for another film feature though, as I couldn’t imagine anyone but McConaughey stepping into the shoes of this character. As for Furman, he only has his planned Pablo Escobar biopic, so it would be great to see him return as it was a perfect fit. Check out the interview below.
