One of those few remakes (or re-imaginings) that feels just right, HBO has put out a one-and-a-half minute teaser trailer for Mildred Pierce, a “mini-series event” from director Todd Haynes, starring Kate Winslet in the title role, along with Guy Pearce and Evan Rachel Wood.

While it will certainly recall both James Cain’s novel and Michael Curtiz’s Joan Crawford-starring 1948 classic, Haynes’ 5-hour film promises to take more from the novel than the film, which added murder to the narrative’s scandal.

Before more is said, take a look-see for yourself:

The trailer makes good use of Dario Marianelli’s beautiful Atonement score, though one expects the music in the actual film will be different. As for casting, every looks perfectly in place, from Winslet and Wood as mother and daughter to Pearce as evil husband and, finally, Melissa Leo as best friend. Color me excited.

Mildred Pierce will premiere on HBO in the spring of 2011.

Will you watch Mildred Pierce? Have you seen the Curtiz movie? Read Cain’s book?
