Every week we dive into the cream of the crop when it comes to home releases, including Blu-ray and DVDs, as well as recommended deals of the week. If we were provided screener copies, we’ll have our own write-up, but if that’s not the case, one can find official descriptions from the distributors. Check out our rundown below and return every Tuesday for the best films one can take home. Note that if you’re looking to support the site, every purchase you make through the links below helps us and is greatly appreciated.

Nashville (Robert Altman)

This cornerstone of 1970s American moviemaking from Robert Altman is a panoramic view of the country’s political and cultural landscapes, set in the nation’s music capital. Nashville weaves the stories of twenty-four characters—from country star to wannabe to reporter to waitress—into a cinematic tapestry that is equal parts comedy, tragedy, and musical. Many members of the astonishing cast wrote their own songs and performed them live on location, which lends another layer to the film’s quirky authenticity. Altman’s ability to get to the heart of American life via its eccentric byways was never put to better use than in this grand, rollicking triumph, which barrels forward to an unforgettable conclusion. – Criterion.com

Serpico (Sidney Lumet)

Adapted by Waldo Salt and Norman Wexler from Peter Maas‘s book, Sidney Lumet‘s Serpico portrays the real-life struggle of an honest New York City cop who wages war against a corrupt system. Officer Frank Serpico (Al Pacino) keeps one foot firmly planted in the counterculture, sporting a beard and love beads and living in bohemian Greenwich Village. But when he refuses to take bribes like his fellow officers, he becomes determined to expose the corruption within his department. Serpico’s information triggers an independent investigation by the Knapp Commission, but also make him a marked man.
