At the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, I was lucky enough to catch Rabies, a low-key horror picture touted as Israel’s first-ever jump into the genre. As far as debuts go, it was an impressive slice of scares, comedy, and smarter-than-we’d-expect glances toward the highly familiar. Admittedly Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado are not a writing-directing duo I’ve had in my thoughts since then, but would I like to see what else they eventually conjure? By all means, yes.
Little did I know they had already assembled another feature. Following its own run at Tribeca, Magnet Releasing have acquired their follow-up, Big Bad Wolves, about which it felt little had been said — but if this first trailer is indicative of what’s to come, that should be changing in good time. In short, all that we see here — framing, lighting, acting, arguably even something larger, e.g. narrative construction — is more than a notable step-up from the rough-hewn quality of Rabies; it gives the impression of a full-fledged vault forward. On this rare occasion, it’s good to take stock in the praise-filled quotes scattered across promotional footage: I’d like to believe it’s true and, given what’s been released, I find it easy to believe.
One can see the preview below (via Twitch):
Synopsis:
“A series of brutal murders puts the lives of three men on a collision course: The father of the latest victim now out for revenge, a vigilante police detective operating outside the boundaries of law, and the main suspect in the killings – a religious studies teacher arrested and released due to a police blunder.”
