Coming off the visually stimulating Play, screened at this year’s New York Film Festival, Swedish director Ruben Ostlund has started planning his latest project. According to Variety, his next writing and directing project will be Tourist, produced by Plattform Produktion’s Erik Hemmendorff and Marie Kjelson.
Tourist will be a three-part film, detailing a Swedish family’s ski trip through the French Alps as an avalanche breaks out, and they deal with acts of cowardliness. According to Ostlund, the project will show “behavior that people have seen in others — mostly in conflict areas — think they’ll never resort to, and then have to admit that they have that side to their character.” Ostlund was also quoted saying that Tourist will include the “most spectacular avalanche in film history.” A tall order.
I, unfortunately, haven’t seen Play, but I have to give it to Ostlund for having so much faith in his latest project. It’s not very often that you see a director claim their project will change film history, yet he’s a professional ski filmmaker; so, hey, you never know. Plattform plans on triggering the spectacular avalanche sometime this winter, with principal photography scheduled for the spring.
Based on what’s been made public, what do you think of Tourist?
