Since making his first feature in 2005, the prolific Joe Swanberg has directed more than a dozen films (with half of those arriving in the last two years) and become a leading figure in the “mumblecore” movement (if that word actually has any meaning). For his latest work, he’s stepping up to a new arena, with his most notable ensemble and budget yet.

Still keeping things on the small scale, Drinking Buddies was a major hit at South by Southwest Film Festival earlier this year, where we said, “one starts to fall for these characters and their naturalistic dialogue and connect to their drama. With a relatable scale, the plot focuses on two friends that have never explored the possibility of a relationship together – even in just a physical sense – but have sexual tension following them like a fog.” The first trailer has now landed and one can see it below for the film starring Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Ron Livingston and Anna Kendrick.

Drinking Buddies hits VOD on July 25th and theaters on August 23rd.
