31 years ago today, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and John Carpenter‘s The Thing hit theaters to battle Steven Spielberg’s E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, which was in its third weekend of release. They both lost out by a wide margin, but eventually each went on to become classics in their respective genres and to celebrate their anniversaries we’re going behind the scenes with two extended making of documentaries.
First up, the 2001 TV documentary On the Edge of Blade Runner runs just under an hour and features interviews conducted by Mark Kermode. While Harrison Ford and Sean Young fail to show up, most of the other creative forces behind the sci-fi masterpiece pop up, as we tour some of the sets and dive into the film’s initial failure and following resurgence. After that, we have a making of documentary for Carpenter’s horror film, which is actually included on the home release. Running just under an hour as well, this one features interviews with the director and crew and focus strictly on the production aspects.
