If you don’t know who Octavia Spencer is by now, chances are you haven’t been on the internet for the past few months; but, the recent Golden Globe, SAG award winner and Oscar-nominated actress has joined the cast of Bong Joon-ho‘s sci-fi indie, Snow Piercer. [THR]

Spencer has boarded the already star studded cast of Chris Evans, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton and Jamie Bell, along with Korean actor Kang Ho Song. As we reported just a few weeks ago, Joon-ho‘s futuristic project has gone under the scribing knife with the help of Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead‘s Kelly Masterson.

Co-written by Joon-ho, the film is “set in a future where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snow Piercer, a train that travels around the globe and is powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine. A class system evolves on the train but a revolution brews.” Spencer is playing a passenger on the train, who “joins the revolt in order to save her son.”

After gaining much success and attention for her role as maid Minny Jackson in The Help, I’m interested in seeing what Spencer can do outside of the realm of Kathyrn Stockett‘s novel.  I don’t want to make it seem like she hasn’t been in anything besides The Help, because that’s not true at all, but you definitely can’t ignore the fact that it catapulted her onto Hollywood’s radar. Before she starts work on Snow Piercer in April, she has signed onto play a part in the currently untitled Diablo Cody project, starting next month.
