After Martin Scorsese handed over the director reigns to Tomas Alfredson last year, the long-gestating adaptation of Jo Nesbo‘s crime novel The Snowman seemed to stay dormant. Today now brings quite an update as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors, Michael Fassbender, is now in talks to star, according to THR.

With Alfredson taking a stab at the screenplay with Soren Sveistrup, the film follows Norwegian detective Harry Hole as he investigates a serial killer, one that last left his mark by putting the victim’s scarf around a snowman. Although only one film is planned, there’s franchise potential considering this is one of many books in the series. By the time the film arrives, it’ll be at least five years since the last work from Alfredson, whose Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Let the Right One In are among the finest features of the 21st century.

As for Fassbender, he’s got a busy fall of promoting Steve Jobs and Macbeth, with The Light Between Oceans, Trespass Against Us, and his Terrence Malick film upon the horizon — not to mention blockbuster roles in X-Men: Apocalypse, Assassin’s Creed, and Prometheus 2. For more on his latest film, check out a recent chat with Danny Boyle at Telluride below upon the premiere of his drama on the Apple co-founder, in which he says he was influenced by none other than Andrei Tarkovsky‘s Solaris.

Are you looking forward to Fassbender’s new role?
