There are very few Oscar players I want to hear from as much as Steven Spielberg, especially when he’s campaigning for a picture as fine as Bridge of Spies — despite (bizarrely) not being nominated for Best Director. And so even a 45-minute interview most likely spurred by a studio’s insistence will still allow his passion, intelligence, and wealth of experience to shine through, and for his unique perspective to play a great part.
A great deal of details can be parsed from his Awards Chatter appearance, which tends to use Bridge as a jumping-off point for any number of things — his experiences directing Joan Crawford as a 22-year-old, his love of Daniel Day-Lewis, the bizarre ways experiences can inform his work, the joy that comes from editing, and more.
