Following in the footsteps of such luminaries as The Jonas Brothers and Justin Bieber, THR reports that Paramount is in early discussions with pop star Katy Perry for a 3D concert movie of her own. Although I’m sure a lot of our readers probably rolled their eyes the second they saw the headline, from a business standpoint it’s actually pretty smart; Paramount’s last 3D concert film, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, grossed over 70 million dollars and is the highest grossing concert movie of all-time.

And for better or worse, Perry is just as popular if not more so than Ms. Bieber; her 2010 album Teenage Dream spent over 60 weeks in the Billboard Top 10 (the only album to ever do so) and spawned five number one singles. That goes hand in hand with over 37 million digital tracks sold in the U.S. alone and over 11 million albums worldwide. A good chunk of people may hate her music, but apparently someone likes it.

As much as I want to bemoan this and crap all over it, I won’t for three reasons. First is the previously mentioned “this is a smart business move” defense and I defy you to say otherwise; I know this is a movie site but gosh dangit sometimes I love the other side of the coin too. Second, concert movies have a short shelf-life so it won’t really clog theaters up for longer than say three weeks tops and will probably be released in a time where it won’t steal screens from a bigger movie.

And last but not least, the third and most important reason: since it’s been so easy to ignore Katy Perry’s music, it’ll probably be even easier to ignore this concert film. In short, just pretend it doesn’t exist and let Paramount soak in the cash from the Perry fanbase while she still has one. This has no merit on the movie industry or movies themselves; this is a separate monster. Just let it growl and do its thing.
