We’ve nearly made it through the treacherous summer blockbuster season and the promising fall line-up awaits, as Venice Film Festival kicks things off at the end of the month with their opening film Gravity. Soon to follow at the event will be Terry Gilliam‘s highly-anticipated The Zero Theorem. Led by Christoph Waltz, we’ve now got new images from the film, which reveal David Thewlis and Melanie Thierry in supporting roles, as they join Ben Whishaw, Sanjeev Bhaskar.
The director also opened up to Deadline about the exorbitant costs of studio films nowadays, commenting that his film is way below $10 million and it’s “the lowest budget film I’ve made in over 30 years.” He says, “You keep waiting to see what’s going to be the new Cleopatra, the one that suddenly takes out a studio. That’s the part I don’t quite understand about this, these economics and how they are able to survive with losing this amount of money as often as they are doing it.
Commenting on The Lone Ranger‘s massive budget, he adds, “That is the problem with these films. By the time you’ve spent $250 million, add another $100 million on top, you’ve got to hit half a billion or more before you break even. It’s madness. I think Hollywood has gone Las Vegas. Let’s put all of the money on red this year. Next year, we’ll put it on black. Hopefully, we’ll hit it.”
We’ve also got new images from another fall film we’re at least curious about. Following the debut of the trailer, on the day that Spike Lee crossed the $1 million mark on his Kickstarter campaign for his next project, we’ve got new stills from his Oldboy remake. Revealing Elizabeth Olsen, as well as Josh Brolin is various states of distress, they can be seen below thanks to Huffington Post.
Zero Theorem doesn’t have U.S. distribution yet, but Oldboy lands on November 27th.
