Yasiin Bey, aka Mos Def, is the latest actor to be lending his talents to the upcoming music-themed drama, Can A Song Save Your Life?, from Once writer/director John Carney. After losing the film’s leading lady, the project has since prevailed, and compiled a pretty impressive list of actors. Bey will be joining the likes of Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, Hailee Steinfeld, as well as some other musically inclined people including, Cee Lo Green and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine for his Hollywood debut. The film, which kicked off production last month in New York City, follows Knightley‘s character, “who moves to NY to pursue her dreams of a singing career but finds herself all alone when she’s dumped by her boyfriend (Levine).” Ruffalo plays a “down-on-his-luck record producer” who finds Knightley‘s character singing in a local bar, which leads to a romance of sorts. Bey will be playing alongside Ruffalo has his “longtime business partner in the recording industry.”
Aside from the fact that Bey has the musical background to back his role in this film, he’s proven himself as a worthwhile actor over the years as well. I think he’ll make a great fit into the drama, and if it’s anything like Carney‘s Once, a few of the actors and/or original songs could show up on the Oscar ballot come award season — for 2014, most likely.
Do you think Bey is a good fit for Can a Song Save Your Life?
