Despite the ceaseless rumors since news hit last weekend that Disney was planning a new Star Wars trilogy after their acquisition of Lucasfilm, at one point or another, the studio will actually have decide on talent if they want to get the film into theaters by 2015. We’ve now got an update on who may actually be stepping behind the camera for the first film in this new trilogy.
After successfully giving X-Men new life with his prequel First Class, we got word recently that Kick-Ass helmer Matthew Vaughn was handing over directing reigns on the sequels, Days of Future Past to producer Bryan Singer. Some thought this was so he could re-team with Mark Millar for the comic-book adaptation of Secret Service, but now a bigger picture is beginning to unfold. Collider has picked up the rumor that Vaughn has begun talks with Lucasfilm to direct Star Wars: Episode VII, a direct reason why he departed the X-Men sequel at the last minute. Considering this is in the very early stages, there’s no word if he (or any director) would be signed on to the full trilogy but the name does correspond with some other shortlists.
However, MarketSaw recently reported that Vaughn, along with Steven Spielberg, Neil Blomkamp, Alfonso Cuarón, Darren Aronofsky and even Joss Whedon were all being looked at for the gig. With Whedon being tied up with The Avengers 2, set for the same summer, Aronofsky busy with Noah, and Spielberg likely giving Lucasfilm not as much creative control as they’d like, the other helmers all seem like a strong fit. Vaughn has been known to deliver under pressure and I could see him crafting something to the studio’s liking, but for now we’ll have to wait for confirmation on this one.
Would you like to see Vaughn direct the next Star Wars?
