With a relatively young career in Hollywood thus far, Mary Elizabeth Winstead has already found work with Quentin Tarantino, Edgar Wright and more, but the actress has now delivered her best performance yet in the indie drama Smashed. Next to Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul, the film from James Ponsoldt is a heartbreaking, raw look at alcoholism. We called it one of the top films at Sundance, where it premiered and after being picked up by Sony Pictures Classics, we now have a release date.
The distributor has set an October 12th limited release for the drama, where it will go up against wide releases of Ben Affleck‘s Argo, the Kevin James comedy Here Comes the Boom, the highly-anticipated, Seven Psychopaths, as well as limited releases of Atlas Shrugged Part 2 and two other Sundance films, Middle of Nowhere and Nobody Walks. I honestly believe Winstead has awards chances with this one, so I hope SPC plays it right.
We’ve also got news that the actress is returning to the Die Hard franchise as Lucy McClane, daughter of Bruce Willis‘ John McLane. The two were spotted on the set of John Moore‘s A Good Day to Die Hard in Budapest. Seen dropping her father off in a taxi, the extent of her role isn’t known, but the film does heavily involve her brother, played by Jai Courtney. Oddly, her Smashed star Aaron Paul was up for this role, but lost out. Actor Ted Cross also updated, confirming he has worked with the actress on set. I suppose we’ll find out just how she fits in when the film hits theaters Valentine’s Day of next year, but one can see some set photos below.
