For the last time readers, Luke Wilson isn’t dead. Deadline reports that the actor is the latest to join the cast of A Many Splintered Thing, starring Chris Evans, Michelle Monaghan, and a bevy of others (including Topher Grace and Aubrey Plaza) who signed on earlier this month. The movie follows a guy who sneaks his way into a charity dinner by pretending to be a philanthropist. There he meets a woman and falls for her, but it turns out that she is already engaged so like any sane non-sociopathic person he decides to pursue her anyway while using the guise of a platonic relationship. How nice.
Evans and Monaghan are set to play the would-be lovers and Topher Grace will be playing Evan’s undoubtedly wise-cracking best friend. The roles of the other actors signed on, including Wilson himself, are up in the air. A Many Splintered Thing is being directed by Justin Reardon in his feature-length debut from a script by Chris Schafer and Paul Vicknair. McG‘s company Wonderland Sound & Vision is co-producing the movie alongside Voltage Pictures and Evans has an executive-producer credit because he’s Captain America and whatever he wants he gets, dammit.
The plot of A Many Splintered Thing is a little awkward, considering that the guy is trying to steal a woman who’s already presumably in love with another man, but it’s being touted as an “anti-romantic comedy” with comparisons to (500) Days of Summer and Amelie so there has to be more to it than what the basic plot outline is stating. I’m willing to give it a shot; the cast is strong (Aubrey Plaza guys, c’mon) and I’m all for a rom-com that tries to break the mold a little bit. Plus I’m very interested to see how Amelie-like it ends up being (my bet is on super quirky characters and possibly an all knowing blind man whom Evans helps across the street while explaining what everything looks like).
Production on A Many Splintered Thing begins in Los Angeles on November 6th.
