In the world of movie journalism there aren’t a lot of times you get the chance to write about Lou Diamond Phillips so when the opportunity presents itself you take it. Deadline reports that the actor has co-written and will star in the true life tale The Boys of Eloy for Majority Entertainment, a new production outfit headed by Michael Montijo. Phillips will play the coach of a co-ed softball group from Eloy, Arizona who overcome a series of obstacles to make it into the 2000 Little League World Series of Softball (yes, that’s a thing). Montijo and Noe Gonzales are the other two credited screenwriters on the project, but no word on the other details.
Phillips has had a long career in the entertainment world, most notably starring as 50’s rock and roll pioneer Richie Valens in La Bamba, but in the past few decades he has taken more low-key roles in smaller films and straight-to-DVD productions (he’s also co-starring in the A&E show Longmire for fans of the small screen). Because of his recent track record it’s reasonable to assume The Boys of Eloy will follow the same fate, but as someone pulling for a Lou Diamond Phillips comeback, here’s hoping it somehow finds a way to the big screen.
