Robert De Niro and Bradly Cooper will be seen together in Neil Burger‘s The Dark Fields this January but the duo are already interested in teaming up again. They have read the Paul Haggis script Honeymoon With Harry. Deadline reports that the six-year-old script has been rejuvenated and that Jonathan Demme (Rachel Getting Married, Philadelphia) is interested. Check out the synopsis and the parts Cooper and De Niro are interested in below.
Cooper read the role of a formerly self-centered womanizing booze-hound who changed his ways when he met a girl and fell in love. De Niro read the role of the girl’s father, who recognizes himself in the young man, and tries to break them up. They get engaged anyway. When she dies tragically just before their wedding, the groom heads off on their honeymoon to drown his sorrows and drink himself to death. There, he meets his almost father-in-law, who has come to spread his daughter’s ashes on her favorite beach.
Deadline is reporting that “one of the script’s problems has been that it has strong comedy and drama elements but can’t exactly be called one or the other.” They compare it to a James Brooks film in which the two characters hate each other but “are stuck together at a time when each is in desperate shape.”
Vince Vaughn and Jack Nicholson were previously interested when it was at New Line, but due to Haggis not being able to agree on a budget, the project fell apart. No deals are in place yet but stay tuned on updates on the now fast-tracked project.
The Dark Fields hits theaters January 21st, 2011.
Would Demme be a good fit directing De Niro and Cooper?
