Update: Stahelski’s publicist has informed us that initial reports are incorrect and he will only be assisting with the film’s action design. Check out the original story below.
While they’ve been involved with filmmaking since the early 1990s, Chad Stahelski and David Leitch ushered in a refreshing burst of comprehensible action seemingly missing from today’s landscape with John Wick. Since then, the former has gone on to shoot the sequel while the latter has the Charlize Theron-led The Coldest City, coming next summer. Now, with rumors swirling that Leitch may take over Deadpool 2, Stahelski has quite the incredible-sounding project lined up himself.
Revealed at this year’s American Film Market, his new film is titled Triple Threat and will team three of the biggest actor stars: Iko Uwais (The Raid), Tony Jaa (Ong Bak), and Tiger Chen (who worked on The Matrix and starred in Keanu Reeves’ debut, Man of Tai Chi). Co-directed by Wang Xiaolie, Dwayne Smith‘s script follows “a Chinese martial artist who goes to Mexico to rescue his ex-wife and their son after they are kidnapped by a drug cartel,” according to THR.
With Arclight Films currently pre-selling the film to buyers at AFM, hopefully this one arrives as soon as possible. Stahelski recently revealed that a John Wick 3 is already in the works, telling Collider, “Yeah, the studio has asked us to put our heads together and see if we can come up with something. Winston’s [Ian McShane] is a big part of the next one, so is Lance Reddick. We’ve got some ideas.” However, there’s no reason he shouldn’t be able to fit this epic-sounding action film in between, so stay tuned for more details.
