The found-footage certainly feels tired as of late, with countless low-budget entries simply repeating the trends of its predecessors. However, this spring, we have one that seems to be curbing that trend. First-time feature filmmakers Derek Lee and Clif Prowse debuted Afflicted at Toronto International Film Festival where it went on to win a special jury prize, followed by top prizes at Fantastic Festival, and today brings the first trailer.
Following two friends who embark on a global, only to have their plans change when one — you guessed it — gets afflicted with some sort of virus that gives him superhero-esque abilities. But like the recent Chronicle, it doesn’t look like his powers will be used for good. We said in our review, “Showing a surprising understanding of what makes a film like this work, the duo gets us to care for our characters before dragging them through hell and back. Additionally, the use of practical effects helps sell the chaos even more, particularly with a low budget.” Check out the trailer and poster below for the film that also stars Lee and Prowse.
This terrifying horror thriller follows two best friends who set out on the trip of a lifetime around the world. Their journey, documented every step of the way, soon takes a dark and unexpected turn after an encounter with a beautiful woman in Paris leaves one of them mysteriously afflicted. Winner: Best Picture (Horror), Best Screenplay (Horror), Best Director (Horror) at Fantastic Fest, and recipient of awards of recognition from the Toronto International Film Festival and the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival. AFFLICTED is one of the most suspenseful and original action horror debuts in a generation.
Afflicted hits VOD and in theaters on April 4th.
