Say it ain’t so. Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox is planning a Commando reboot. They have hired David Ayer (Harsh Times, Street Kings) to write and direct. He will put a “real-world” spin on the original premise of “a retired elite special forces operative sees his daughter kidnapped and is told she’ll die unless he gets on a plane and kills the rival of a nasty exiled dictator.”

It is reported this unknown star will be “less brawny, but more skilled in covert tactics and weaponry.” I loved the first. It’s a crazy fun and ridiculous action movie, but then again, I haven’t seen it since I was a kid. For those that don’t know Die Hard was originally supposed to be a Commando sequel, but the script was reworked into one of the best action films ever made.

I really disliked the first act of Street Kings I watched. I kind of enjoyed Ayer’s directorial debut Harsh Times featuring Christian Bale so hopefully he can do a good job with this one. Based on his previous work, I’m afraid it may be too serious and not embrace the aspects that made the original so fun.

For those that can’t get enough reboot action, Fox is also releasing Predators this July.
