“The euphoria and anguish of first love has been captured in countless films, but few do it with the level of raw authenticity and intimacy as found in Hannah Fidell‘s latest feature,” we said in our review. “6 Years, which seemingly takes place over the course of only a few weeks, tracks a climactic point in the relationship of Dan (Ben Rosenfield) and Melanie (Taissa Farmiga), childhood friends who have been dating for a half-dozen years and are forced to confront major changes as college winds down and their future options open up.”

Ahead of a release next month, the first trailer has now landed, which sells some of the aforementioned authenticity. “She’s growing up and trying to figure out how to handle her emotions,” Farmiga tells Yahoo, speaking about her character. “It’s her first serious relationship and I was going through similar things at the time. Learning how to communicate is a big thing I got to discover… I like to play new people because it helps me figure out how to be them and [in turn] it helps me figure out who I am.”

Also starring Lindsay Burdge, Joshua Leonard, and Jennifer Lafleur, check out the trailer and poster below.

A young couple in their early 20s, Dan and Melanie, have known each other since childhood. Now their 6-year romantic relationship is put to the test when Dan receives an attractive job offer from the record label with whom he interns, and he must choose between a move forward and a future with Mel. Growth and temptation happen – but will their relationship remain part of their future?

Writer/director Hannah Fidell explores the struggles of young love as it begins to face the next steps into adulthood. Taissa Farmiga and Ben Rosenfield give warm, genuine performances as Mel and Dan, alongside Lindsay Burdge (star of Fidell’s A Teacher) as a colleague of Dan’s who entices him in more ways than one.
