After years of attempting to get a Ghostbusters 3 off the ground, it looks like Sony has finally found a way to do so, but not in the form one might expect. Variety reports that Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig is in talks direct a reboot of Ghostbusters, one that would feature an all-female leading cast. While we had a guess at what the cast might be, it’s still in the early stages, with Feig rewriting the script from scratch. This sounds like a much better direction than trying to corral the original members for a follow-up and as we await further details, we’ll leave the naysayers with this message from the director himself.
It’s been known for some time that Harmony Korine and Robert Pattinson were looking to make a feature together, with the actor recently saying, “I might film something with Harmony Korine, with whom I’ve been dreaming to work since I was 17, like with James Gray [with whom he’s working with next year on Lost City of Z]. I keep asking him what the film is about but he doesn’t want to tell me.” It looks like brief details have slipped to Esquire, who reveal in an interview with Pattinson that it will be a gangster movie set in Miami. They note it’s still being written so perhaps production may not begin as quickly as planned.
In other directing news, Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds) has become attached to a very different genre than he’s used to. Variety reports he’ll helm the sci-fi thriller Near Death. Scripted by Carter Blanchard, the project follows a “near-death survivor who starts predicting future events and acting in bizarre ways while his wife notices the world itself changing all around her in impossible ways. Fearing for her sanity, she investigates and uncovers a massive conspiracy that bridges space and time.”
Lastly, after the thrillers Buried and Red Lights, director Rodrigo Cortés has found a new project, The Wrap reports. Down a Dark Hall, based on Lois Duncan‘s 1974 novel, is set up at Lionsgate and follows a girl a boarding school who “quickly realizes something strange is happening behind its walls as she confronts the darkly seductive powers of Blackwood’s headmistress and comes face to face with the supernatural powers that could make her great or destroy her.”
What do you think of a female-led Ghostbusters reboot? Are you looking forward to Korine’s Pattinson-led gangster feature?
