He and Sam Raimi may or may not be preparing a highly unusual cross-pollination horror resurrection — but, in the meantime, an original project awaits prolific up-and-comer Fede Alvarez. As told in THR, MRC have snatched up an original pitch of his, Machina, that will be co-scripted with Rodo Sayagues, partner on this spring’s Evil Dead remake and two earlier, career-building shorts. Unfortunate news for those with a desire to learn more: the title’s a “top secret sci-fi project,” and we’re unlikely to know another thing until further parties — likely those with a financial interest, as well as the means to turn said interest into more advanced development — are entering the fray. Should this story serve as any indication, it’s only getting off the ground.
If nothing else, an angle toward something non-deadite might, too, be an opportunity for Alvarez to maintain personal momentum as Raimi and Campbell accelerate movement on Army of Darkness 2, after which a new kind of Evil Dead 2 can begin, finally leading to… or, not. (Such circumstances would still depend on half of the proposed team announcing something in a more official capacity, and we don’t have that at the moment.) More simply, it’s somewhat encouraging that a young, visually dynamic genre director would step away from the remake / sequel culture for one second to handle material more directly of their own devising; with any luck, Machina will be worth this initial appreciation.
Any thoughts on Alvarez’s proposed next step, as early as it is into a lifespan?
