After making his Hollywood debut in the Europe-set Inglourious Basterds, Christoph Waltz will return for another major project — one that is a far cry from anything Quentin Tarantino-related. The Hollywood Reporter updates that the Django Unchained star is in talks to join Disney’s sequel to The Muppets.
As we know, Jason Segel won’t return to write or star (except for a possible cameo), but co-writer Nicholas Stoller and Muppets director James Bobin will step back into their roles. Expect a pile of cameos to be announced (or rather, leaked), but word has it Waltz will take a role of a Interpol inspector while a Russian femme fatale has yet to be cast and another male lead role “whose intentions are always in question” is still in the cards.
With Waltz making a name for himself with his serious demeanor, but off-the-cuff humor, I could see him fitting perfect in this franchise. If The Muppets marks his “fun” roles, I’d take it over something like The Green Hornet or The Three Musketeers any day. A summer 2013 release has been rumored, but expect it to be pushed since production has to begin and we’ll have more updates as they roll in.
Are you looking forward to Waltz in a Muppets movie?
