It’s official, and thank God. Chris Evans (Sunshine, Fantastic Four) will play Captain America in Marvel Studio’s The First Avenger: Captain America, directed by Joe Johnston. [Heat Vision]

The rumors and casting reports were wide and diverse, ranging from John Krasinski to Ryan Phillippe to Channing Tatum to my mother at one point.

Evans has been poised for stardom for some time now, and this all but guarantee’s it. That said, with the sign of a pen he’s committed to 9 films at $300,000 a pop, not too shabby for Joe Everyman but not too much for someone who could be RDJ this time next year.

I like Evans for the role. He’s old enough to play weathered and young enough to look like a soldier.

Do you like Chris Evans? Can he carry a blockbuster like Captain America?
