In the 1960’s, Batman creator Bob Kane decided to lampoon his beloved character and his young sidekick/ward Robin and created the animated series Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse. The parallels were obvious for anyone paying attention; Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse lived in the “Cat Cave” and were summoned via “Cat Signal” and lived in a metropolis known as “Empire City” (okay, maybe the last one isn’t a connection). With a short run time of 5 minutes, these cartoons were used to fill time between programs on a variety of television stations. And unless you were a child in the 1960’s or grew up on the 1990’s Nickelodeon show/acid trip Weinerville there’s a good chance you have probably never heard of these characters.
But if Evergreen Media Group has their way, the whole world will soon know the name “Courageous Cat”. The company has signed a deal with Telefilms LLC (who own the rights to the character) for a Courageous Cat movie. Much like other adaptations of older cartoons (Underdog, The Smurfs), Evergreen Media Group is planning the film to be a family friendly action/comedy that blends together CGI and live-action elements, and will be “reimagining the mythology” for a new generation of moviegoers who will have absolutely no idea there was even a mythology to be changed in the first place. This announcement was made via press release, and included a teaser poster which you can check out below:
…I didn’t say it was a good teaser poster. Being is this is just the announcement of an acquisition, we are probably still a ways off from any meaty news on the movie itself (you know, superfluous things like screenwriters or cast or director). Courageous Cat was created as satire in the first place, so there are some interesting places it could go if Evergreen Media Group is willing to take that path. I’m just hoping and praying they don’t make any “LOLCATS” or “funny YouTube cat video” jokes, although to be honest it seems sort of inevitable. We’ll let you know more about Courageous Cat once more news about the project breaks, but until then check out the opening credits sequence of the old cartoon show to get at least a minor feel of what the movie could be (and do your best to ignore that hideous watermark).
Any interest in a Courageous Cat movie? Do you even know what a “Courageous Cat” is?
